Encouraging the IncorrigibleI was a bright child, but my precocity was frequently inadvertent. It’s a dangerous combination to be both ahead of yourself and naive—you trip over your own innocence. I was double-promoted from first to third grade because of my apparent intelligence, but that promotion always made me feel years younger than everyone else instead of just one. To compensate, I tried to seem witty and amuse my classmates, often at my own expense. When my friend James (who was kept back a grade and was two or three years older than me, and acted it—he smoked and wasn’t a virgin by sixth grade) asked me why I was so weird, I blithely replied
